A Winter’s MPG Tale

Back when I started this blog I made a real effort to monitor the real world mpg of my Saab 9-3 TTiD 200bhp. Over the course of a year it had highs and lows, never really moving from 40 – 43 mpg with regular daily driving, that’s around 550 miles from a full tank.

I can push it seriously hard one day and take it easy the next, sit at high speeds on the motorway or fly along country lanes, but the figures remain pretty constant. Over the past few months however, I’ve seen a real drop in these figures, down to 38 – 39 mpg, that’s between 450 – 500 miles per tank.

This is an mpg trend that’s happened for the third Winter running, here in the UK we don’t get harsh Winters, we may get snow or extreme weather for a few days but nothing for a prolonged period, so I wonder what changes?

If it’s abusing the Saab heated seats then I’m fully to blame, say no more.

Half full or half empty?

Forever the optimist, it has to be half full, how could it be anything else.

Not one to fastidiously watch my mpg figures, I tend to go by what the fuel gauge tells me, so when it’s half full, I always expect to get the same milage out of the second half, except I don’t. It never fails to surprise me, too optimistic I suppose.

Anyway, despite my optimism I realised I hadn’t done an update on real world fuel consumption for a while now, so thought I’d better catch up.

It seems that, no matter how I drive the Saab the mpg remains the same; I can enjoy a superb and rather rapid journey, or I can relax and take things easy, it always stays the same. It’s averaging between 41.5mpg and 43.0mpg, and nearly always covers 550 miles per tank.

There are exceptions though, our drives to Cornwall generally push up the mpg to around 47 – 48. I suppose if I slowed down to the recommended speeds I’d get more still, but Saabs are made for driving, and where would be the fun in that?

So, with just over a year of journeys in the Saab, I’m more than happy with the consumption figures –  even if the gauge always looks half full.

Six Hundred & Twenty Three [Dot] Two Miles

I’m rather proud of this one, as it’s the first time since owning my SAAB 9-3 TTiD i’ve achieved over 600 miles from a single tank of fuel.

Having put 55 litres in at the same D.T.E that works out at around 51mpg –  cool.

I must confess, this did include a 300 mile round trip to pick up a 9-3 SportsCombi for my wife, thus travelling at a very steady 70 most of the way, but the rest of the tank has been used up with city driving, so not bad for a combined figure.

It’s still a good way off the official SAAB combined consumption figure of 62.8, but with all of the Hirsch engine upgrades, exhaust, large wheels etc, I’m really happy.

If you’re interested in how the SAAB is generally performing, mpg wise, i’ve got an ongoing record here.
